Some years back I worked for the BBC and I used to see him when he was recording a radio series called Think The Unthinkable. He was quite attractive as he didn't have a beard in those days

Thanks, Mark. Interesting, but a shame he did not say why he is circumcised, other than 'not for religious reasons'.

Marcus mentioned that he was a public schoolboy, so his circumcision would have been a social class thing.

Following on from what Pete said, I remember reading not that long ago that, until quite recent times, circumcision was a requirement of some boarding schools. I have no idea when this ended (iif it has) as a went to an ordinary comprehensive school myself.

One was educated privately and can confirm that the instances of circumcision are greater in private educational establishments than state. One briefly attended a comprehensive secondary institution in Northern England and only recall one individual with a clipped status where as around 50% of my counterparts at private educational establishments we indeed "done." One would tend to agree with Peter in that the practice is less common (although no extinct) among the upper classes.

He mentions in his book, God Collar, that he wasn’t circumcised for religious reasons. He says that his family has circumcised for generations and it is just something that they’ve done.

Ah - thanks for that. I wonder how common the 'non-religious family tradition' is these days. Most likely confined to those who can afford to go private.

Will, I don’t think it’s that common nowadays. We had our boys circumcised (see Pint With Pete in The Pub) because I am but we are almost always the only circumcised family at the naturist sites we attend (which are family-orientated). Neither our boys nor I attended private school mind, so it may still occur in such environments, though I suspect less than it used to. Peter

OK, so: copy of Richard Herring's book Talking Cock arrived the othe day. As he says, there's a whole chapter on circumcision (chapter 4, The First Cut is the Deepest). Doesn't really say much more than we already know: responses from the online survey equally divided between 'happy I am' and and 'furious I am', as might be expected. Overview of it from Engypt to Judaism to Christianity. The some questions:

Will, I agree with Richard Herring that foreskin restoration is a waste of time - they run around for years with trumpet mouthpieces dangling from their helmets and even if they manage to "grow" skin (and I am sure most of the growth is in the mind of the restorer) if there are all this erogenous zones in the original foreskin, they cannot be reproduced.

He says: '...because usually my foreskin did not completely cover the head of my penis. I didn't know if this this meant that part of the hood had been removed or whether I was deficient in some way.

Marcus was on the Manatomy podcast recently and he spoke about circumcision. He said that his paternal grandfather was a GP and that was probably why he was done as a baby. I’m guessing that his father and brother would also be circumcised if it was due to the grandfather being pro-circ.

What British men are packing downstairsMore than one in five British men are circumcised (helmets/roundheads), but a lot of our cut brothers have grown up feeling isolated. Categories
